The Wonthaggi Golf Glub was formed at a meeting in Mr. G. Lees' rooms on Thursday, March 12, 1925.

Ten people attended that meeting and agreed to form a Golf Club.  The office bearers elected were: President G. Broome; Vice Presidents J. McLeish and G. Falloon; Secretary T. Redding; Treasurer J. Robertson; Captain H. Warriner; and a committee comprising Messrs, Monteath, Ball, O'Brien, McMahon and McCall.

The first golf course was set out on land occupied by the State Coal Mine (Western area) near where Donmix Pty. Ltd are now situated.  This course consisted of nine holes, of which four holes were situated on either side of the Western area road, and the 5th hole was negotiated by playing across the road.

The first members to be accepted to the club were Messrs, Weilings, Wishart, Pratt, Connor, Foster, Patterson and Hollole.  The first competition, a handicap sweepstake was played on  April 4, 1925, and the Club was officially opened on June 13, 1925.  The first Men's Champion was J.D. O'Brien and the Ladies Champion was a Miss Le Muitre.

At the 1926 Annual Meeting a motion was carried to make endeavours to form an Association comprising Leongatha, Korumburra, Loch, Lang Lang and Wonthaggi and in 1927 the club became affiliated with the V.G.A.

Moving to its present location 1930, this course consisted of 9 holes and the Clubhouse had neither a floor nor heating.

Through the '30s, the Club gradually grew in membership.  Several works programs were implemented including tree planting, sanding greens, enlarging tees, hurrowing fairways and introducing bunkers to the course.

In 1940, the Club saw the death of one of its inaugural members H.K. Hollole.  Being the Club Championship leading scratch  player, it was decided to create a suitable memorial trophy which is still played for today.
