Wonthaggi was the centre for black coal mining between 1910 and 1968 from the network of underground mines. The mines created a thriving industrial settlement for miners and their families during that period. Since the mine closed, Wonthaggi's large commercial centre has developed and parts of the old mine now reopened for guided tours. Places of interest in the town include the former railway station with the Wonthaggi Historical Society and the Wonthaggi Hotel which has on display outside the giant jaw bones of a 23 metre whale that washed up on a near by beach back in 1923.

The drive from Anderson to Wonthaggi offers views of the spectacular coast, the newly installed wind-farm and takes you through the township of Kilcunda with its famous tressle bridge and equally famous "Killy" Pub. Between Cape Paterson and Inverloch is a 12 km scenic coastal drive that includes the Bunurong Marine Park and offering spectacular views towards Wilsons Promontory.  Both Inverloch and Cape Paterson offer tranquil coastal living for visitors and permanent living.
